10 KEY MOMENTS OF THE 2016 YEAR
Here are 10 big moments who marked the year 2016. They are ranked from the latest to the earliest.
3RD DECEMBER 2016
END OF CAREER FOR AL MOUHANNAD
The Royal Cavalry of Oman representative Al Mouhannad (Nizam) stopped training at the beginning of December. Trained by Christian Baillet, this Purebred Arabian mare won three times the Jebel Ali Racecourse Za’abeel International Stakes (Gr. I PA).
And in 2017? The Hassan Mousli, Nada Mousalli and Faiz Alelweet bred mare, from the close family of the crack Al Mourtajez (Dahess), took the direction of the haras du Grand Courgeon. She will be bred this year for the account of the Royal Cavalry of Oman.
13th NOVEMBER 2016, ABU DHABI (UAE)
RB BURN WINS WITH CLASS THE SHEIKH ZAYED BIN SULTAN AL NAHYAN JEWEL CROWN
RB Burn (Majd Al Arab) won by three lengths the richest Purebred Arabian race of the world in front of Mabrooka (Mahabb). The winner is well known in France: he arrived in July of his 3yo year at Élisabeth Bernard's stables, after starting in the United States. He placed himself in the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr. I PA) and the Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes de 4 ans (Gr. I PA). It is also a big success for two French men based in the Gulf: the jockey Gérald Avranche and the trainer Éric Lemartinel, in charge of Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan's horses.
And in 2017? RB Burn finished second in a Group I PA for his return. Éric Lemartinel seems to have a few good young horses in training able to do well in the upcoming months.
2ND OCTOBER 2016, CHANTILLY (FR)
AL MOURTAJEZ IMPERIAL IN THE QATAR ARABIAN WORLD CUP
We knew that he was practically unbeatable. Al Mourtajez (Dahess) did as expected in the Arabian World Cup (Gr. I PA), dominating very easily his rivals. However, he could not lead the race. In the past, Al Mourtajez could have been troubled by such a situation. It was not the case. He quickly relaxed himself. Passing the post, more than four lengths ahead, showed his superiority.
And in 2017? Al Mourtajez is on his way to the Doha Triple Crown and his bonus of a million dollars. He already won the two first legs, in England and Chantilly. He now needs to win end of February in Qatar, in the Emir’s Sword (Gr. I PA).
1ST OCTOBER 2016, CHANTILLY (FR)
NAZIQ’S "TOUR DE FORCE"
Naziq (Mahabb) showed how powerful she was in the Total Arabian Trophy des Juments (Gr. I PA), on the 1st October at Chantilly. She wins the competition, two years after her sister, Loraa. Naziq was already fifteen lengths ahead coming out of the last turn ! Despite the attacks in the final phase, Naziq kept a four length gap on the finish line.
And in 2017? Naziq stopped training in November. We should know in the following weeks if she goes back to stud or to training for another racing season.
29TH AND 30TH SEPTEMBER 2016, SAINT-CLOUD (FR)
THE 3YOS DO THEIR SHOW
Samaa (Majd Al Arab), a Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani owned and bred filly, clearly dominated the 2016 edition of the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr. I PA). In the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr. I PA), Motrag (Amer) and Zikreet (Dahess), two Al Shaqab Racing representatives, shuttered the current track record.
And in 2017? We will have to count on these three young horses to break the hierarchy established by the older horses in the upcoming years. And they are not the only ones because we have seen in France other 3yo colts and fillies (Ahzar, Dahham...) Some of them should progress, the 3yo generation seen in 2016 has everything to become a good one.
29TH SEPTEMBER 2016, SAINT-CLOUD (FR)
HIGHER INDICATORS AND SELECTIVE MARKET FOR THE PUREBRED ARABIAN SALE
Like each year, the Purebred Arabian sale organized by Arqana with the Afac is the first event of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr. I) weekend. The 2016 edition showed results in real progression, close to records back in 2007. The turnover climbs by 28% compared to 2015, for an average price of €42,107 (+20%). Only the percentage of sold horses drops to 64%. Like for the thoroughbreds, the market seems very selective. This edition was highlighted by the comeback of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He had mandated Faisal Al Rahmani (Emirates Bloodstock) for his numerous purchases. The haras de Mandore comes first among the consignors.
And in 2017? The quality of horses being better, the results on track should follow the promotion of this sale. The victory of Faucon du Loup (Darweesh) in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round II (Gr. I PA) and the end of January sets off the 2017 year in the best way for horses out of this sale.
24TH JULY 2016, NEWBURY (GB)
HORSES BORN AND TRAINED IN FRANCE DOMINATE THE NEWBURY MEETING
Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum had travelled over to the Dubai International Arabian Races, on the 24th July at Newbury. And he was not disappointed.
Muraaqib (Munjiz) was the most impressive. The François Rohaut trained colt flew over the Shadwell Dubai International Stakes (Gr. I PA). In the Dubai Duty Free Hatta International Stakes (Gr. I PA), Sylvine Al Maury (Munjiz) demolished the opposition. The Élisabeth Bernard trained filly, who carried the colours of the Royal Cavalry of Oman, then placed third of the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown.
And in 2017? Muraaqib is back in training. We count on him and Sylvine Al Maury to ‛do the show’ in 2017.
26 MARCH 2016, MEYDAN (UAE)
A FIRST SUCCESS FOR THE EMIRATI BLOODSTOCK IN THE DUBAI KAHAYLA CLASSIC
By winning the Dubai Kahayla Classic (Gr. I PA), Af Mathmoon (Af Albahar) became the first United Arab Emirates born and bred horse to win the great race. Even though he is born in the Gulf, his sire stands in France (haras de Thouars) and his dam has French origins. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum also broke the record of Manark (Mahabb). He was then defeated in the Bani Yas (Gr. II PA) by the ‛FR’ Shateh (Mahabb).
And in 2017? Af Mathmoon starts the year in the best of ways. He won by eight lengths the Al Maktoum Challenge R1 (Gr. I PA), in front of RB Burn and Manark.
27TH FEBRUARY 2016, DOHA (QA)
A BLUE FLOOD IN THE EMIR'S SWORD
The Al Shahania blue silks had three runners in the Emir’s Sword (Gr. I PA). Horses from these stables Gazwan (Amer) and Assy (Amer) took the two first places of the race. Al Mourtajez, the big favourite, came third.
And in 2017? Al Mourtajez, defeated in particular conditions, will do everything to take his revenge and win the third leg of the Triple Crown.
27TH JANUARY 2016
THE ‛FR’ DOMINATE INTERNATIONAL RATINGS
By stepping up on the two first places of the 2015 worldwide podium, Al Mourtajez and Al Mouwaffak offer a great double win to their breeders, Nada Mousalli, Faiz Al Elweet and Hassan Mousli. Fifteen of the twenty firsts of the older horses list are French bred and nineteen of them have ran in France. Finally, half of the twenty best are by stallions currently standing in France. Even though the French horses dominated the older horses’ category in 2015, this supremacy also spreads itself to the 3yos.
