A WORD FROM AFAC - A RACEDAY UNDER THE SHADWELL - DIAR UMBRELLA

La Teste-de-Buch has, in successive years, played host to one of the European legs of the DIAR (Dubai International Arabian Races).

During the July 3rd meeting, Shadwell sponsored three races including two Group events. Richard Lancaster, the Shadwell director, also graced the meeting.

In addition to the racing, all the breeders which had bred mares to ‘Shadwell’ stallions, plus the connections of those with runners on the card, were invited to a lunch organised by the sponsor. We are pleased to report that Édouard de Rothschild and Bertrand Bélinguier were among the invites. They were seated on the top table in company with Richard Lancaster, Jean-Marie Plassan and Axelle Nègre de Watrigant.

The Prix Shadwell - Bengali d'Albret was the ‘opener’ on the card, with the two Group events forming the final two heats and namely:

  • Shadwell - Critérium des Pouliches (GR. II PA)
  • Shadwell - Coupe du Sud-Ouest des Pur-sang Arabes (GR. III PA)

After every race, Richard Lancaster presented the winning owner, trainer and jockey with a trophy. The stable staff responsible for the best turned out horses were also rewarded.

Throughout the day, children which attended the meeting were given a DIAR rucksack containing a number of gifts.

We would like to express our deep appreciation to Shadwell for their efforts in relation to organising the meeting. It’s much appreciated by the professionals in terms of the quality of the racing and convivial atmosphere.

THE ELECTION OF THE AFAC BOARD

The AFAC ruling council met on July 13th with a view to electing its new board, and this initiative championed by Yves Plantin, resulted in Axelle Nègre de Watrigant assuming the presidency.

Yves Plantin, the AFAC founding father and a veritable walking encyclopaedia about the history of the Purebred Arabian, was elected vice president. The change further underscores a desire to keep abreast with current trends, and a marker as to how the association interacts with the different components which make up the Purebred Arabian sector.

The treasurer Jean-Marc de Watrigant and secretary Jean-Paul Larrieu remain in situ after being elected for a further term.

Axelle Nègre de Watrigant said: "It’s obviously an honour to be elected as AFAC President even if it has caught me a little unawares. Yves Plantin has always been a staunch advocate of the racing Purebred Arabian. Many simply have no idea of the full extent of his achievements. The AFAC, as a team, is there for those who are passionate, and even ardently so, about the Purebred Arabian! I am happy to have facilitated a rapport with France Galop by virtue of my position on the Comité régional des courses au galop du Sud-Ouest [editor's note: Regional Committee of Racing in the South-West]. The AFAC is recognised for its dynamism which comes complete with its annual sale which is organised in partnership with Arqana, as well as its extensive communication policy and the organisation of its racing calendar, which dovetails with numerous sponsors and the services provided to members. It needs to, in future, to work towards a better form of legitimacy which reflects the incredible expansion of the French Purebred Arabian racing sector."
