QATAR DERBY DES PUR-SANG ARABES DE 4 ANS - RODESS DU LOUP GIVES CHARLES GOURDAIN A SECOND DERBY SUCCESS

CHANTILLY (FRA), 17th June 2018

Gr. I PA - 4-year-olds - 2,000m - € 150,000

After taking up a handy position behind the leaders, Rodess du Loup (Dahess) dominated at the business end of the Qatar Derby des Pur-sang Arabes de 4 ans (Gr. I PA). Rijm (Azadi) and Hajres (Nizam) both finished to good effect in the second and third but were ultimately safely held by the winner. After winning the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Classic - Poulains (Gr. II PA) at the backend of last season, Rodess du Loup recorded his first Group I PA success. He has established himself as the best four-year-old of the current season. The win enabled trainer, Charles Gourdian, successful last season with Nafees (Azadi), to record back to back wins in this race. However, the winner is in different ownership to the latter and carries the colours of Qatari owner Khalifa Hamad Al Attiyah.

WINNING IN STYLE

Mashhur Al Khalediah (Jalnar Al Khalidiah) was quickest out of the gates. He set the tempo with the Karin Van Den Bos duo, Akoya (Muqatil Al Khalidiah) and Dynamites (Nashwan Al Khalidiah), chasing him along on his outside. Rodess du Loup kept the leaders in his sights and, when the pacesetters weakened, he swooped and proved a decisive winner. He won almost easing up. Finishing to good effect, Rijm was beaten a length into second with Hajres a close third. Rajeh (Jaafer ASF) was agonisingly pipped for minor honours and had to settle for fourth.

THE BLINKERS ARE DISGARDED THIS TIME

Only fifth on his return in the Prix Dormane (Gr. III PA), Rodess du Loup set the record straight – much to the satisfaction of trainer Charles Gourdain. He said: "His seasonal debut went badly. We equipped him in blinkers and he wasted vital energy by pulling too hard. He was very well ridden by Christophe Soumillon and had a perfect race. I’m very happy for the owners and thank them for their trust. It’s a great pleasure to be able to win these type of races. I would also like to thank Gérard Larrieu who has always been by my side with this particular horse."

RIJM IS BACK

Thomas Fourcy, the trainer of the second Rijm, said: "He has run very well. His jockey was under instructions to ride him for a place and the horse responded well in the straight – by picking up the pace and giving generously of himself. Although the winner had a happier time of it during the race, my horse lost no caste in defeat. I’m very happy with his performance. He’s a small horse who needs time between his races and is one who is ‘wholehearted’ in terms of effort. I am going to see how he comes out of the race before deciding where we go

next."

HAJRES COULD TAKE THE ROUTE TO NEWBURY

Élisabeth Bernard, the trainer of the third Hajres, said: "I’m disappointed. The race set up perfectly for horse and rider and he didn’t pull. However, when he needed to accelerate, he didn’t pick up. He ran on for third but it was too late. I think that he is too used to running on sand and the ground didn’t help him. He will tackle a Group race over 2,000 meters at La Teste-de-Buch and then I would like to run him in Britain."

FROM THE FAMILY OF AL ANGA

Rodess du Loup went through the ring at Arqana Sales as a juvenile and was bought back for 75,000 euros. He was consigned by the Haras de Saint-Faust where he boarded, having been born at the breeding establishment of Jean-Marc Saphores – something he shares in common with Chéri Bibi and, more recently, Faucon du Loup. The colt made his debut in the colours of Gérard Larrieu before being sold privately after his first win. His sire Dahess (Amer) has again proved his ability to generate Group I PA winners throughout the world. Al Shaqab Racing stand him at the Haras de Thouars. The dam of Rodess Du Loup, Aurore du Loup (Darike), was unraced but she is a full sister to the Prix Tornado de Syrah (Gr. II PA) winning Akim du Loup. Aurore du Loup has generated the Listed placed Photon du Loup (Dahess).  The second dam, Salia du Loup (Manganate), with the exception of Akim du Loup, has also produced Kerbelle du Loup (Kerbella). She is none other than the dam of Al Anga (Amer) whose eight wins include the Qatar Gold Trophy (Gr. II PA) and the Clarendon International Stakes (Gr. III PA). The third dam Nivada (Flipper) has generated Sophie du Loup (Manganate) and Vanessa du Loup (Manganate). The former won ten races during her career with the latter proving successful six times in the US. Nivada has extended her influence via her daughters and the great champions such as Lahib (Qatar Arabian World Cup, Gr. I PA), Mabrooka (Arabian Trophy des Pouliches and Coupe de France des Pur-sang Arabes, Gr. Is PA), and Câlin de Louve (Drinker of the Wind Futurity, Gr. I PA) all descend from her.
