PRIX BURKEGUY - WATHBA STALLIONS CUP - THE TALENTED AND WAYWARD AL SHAMOOS

LA TESTE-DE-BUCH (FRA), 22nd July 2018

L. PA - 4-year-olds and up - 1,400m - € 25,000

Al Shamoos (No Risk Al Maury) and Al Naama (Majd Al Arab) have gone head to head several times since 2017. At times unpredictable, Al Shamoos trails her archrival 3-2 on the scoreboard after five meetings. On her previous start at Dax, Al Shamoos veered markedly off a true line in the latter stages before just coming up short. However, on their third clash, again at Dax, Al Shamoos hammered the same opponent by 15 lengths. This time she again proved tops by lifting the Prix Burkeguy - Wathba Stallions Cup (L. PA) at La Teste-de-Buch on July 22nd.

A FEW SHENANIGANS IN THE FINAL STAGES

The two fillies dictated terms from the off as Al Naama set the tempo on the rails with Al Shamoos shadowing her on the outside. The Al Shaqab Racing runner was still at the head of affairs going to the final 400 metres. However, Al Shamoos responded to the urgings of her rider Delphine Santiago by grabbing the lead before hanging towards the centre of the track. Nearing the line, she again started to hang. However, the filly managed to maintain the lead before posting a short head triumph. It was her third win and the second one in France under the tutelage of Charles Gourdain. Al Naama, narrowly denied on this occasion, had two lengths to spare over the third Ahzar (Munjiz).

Charles Gourdain said: "She’s a very courageous filly who continues on an upward curve. She was very well ridden by Delphine Santiago who pulled out all the stops. She should have three wins under her belt this year as, on her previous run, she was continually hampered in the straight at Dax. However, she managed to turn the tables on Al Naama in this race without recourse to the claim of her rider. She’s a light framed and small filly but one with a very big heart. She hails from a very good Iraqi female line and I’m delighted to be training her. She could make a return trip to La Teste-de-Buch, which isn’t a million miles away from home, to contest the Prix Nevadour (Gr. III PA) for 4-year-old fillies on August 17th. That should give us a better idea of her stamina limits [editor’s note: this race is run over 1,900 meters and the filly has never raced beyond 1,600 meters].

FROM A RENOWNED IRAQI FAMILY

Al Shamoos was bred by her owner Mohammad Al Nujaifi. She was bought back for 35,000 euros at the Saint-Cloud sales as a juvenile and is a daughter of the No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy), the Shadwell sire based at the Haras de Saint-Faust. The dam Hamiya (Al Hasim) won ten races in Iraq including the local 2,000 Guineas and the Farewell Cup (Gr. Is PA). As a broodmare, she has generated four black type performers including the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Juments (Gr. I PA) winning Muneera (Dormane); plus Hurra (Asad Saif) who was second in the International Ifahr Trophy (Gr. II) at Istanbul and third in the Hatta International Stakes (Gr. I PA) at Newbury; and the Swedish Group placed Al Haail (Elios de Carrère). The second dam, Al Karta (Zad Al Rakib), won eight races in Iraq including the Iraqi Jockey Club Trophy (Gr. I PA). She was also second in both the local versions of the Derby and 2,000 Guineas (Gr. I PA).
