QATAR ARABIAN TROPHY DES POULICHES - AL HAFFANAH MAKES HER CONSIDERABLE CLASS TELL

SAINT-CLOUD (FRA), 5th October 2018

Gr. I PA – 3-year-olds - Fillies – 2,000m - € 100,000

In the presence of her owner-breeder, His Excellency Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani, Al Haffanah (Amer) left her rivals for dead. After a successful introduction in a maiden race on August 1st, the three-year-old successfully stepped up to Group I PA company on her second career start by showcasing her considerable talents. The Thomas Fourcy runner again showed her powers of acceleration by ruthlessly cutting through the field to record an easy win in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr. I PA).

Showing finishing speed worthy of the very best

After sitting in last place for a long way, Al Haffanah effortlessly made up ground at the beginning of the straight when she was in the slipstream of the favourite Baseel (Munjiz).

Once Julien Augé asked his mount to pick up, she rapidly put daylight between herself and her rivals and won in very good style. After matching strides with the pacesetting Awasef Al Khalidiah (Nayef Al Khalidiah) for a long way, Bayan (Munjiz) held on to second after turning back the persistent challenge of Baseel who is in the same ownership. Adiba (Burning Sand) didn’t have the happiest of runs in the dying stages and finished just behind Douhha Al Cham (Azadi) and Maraasem (Akim de Ducor).

A very symbolic victory

Al Haffanah is the first foal of her dam Al Nachmiya (Azadi), herself a winner of the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches. The latter occupies a special place in the racing fortunes of Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani and Thomas Fourcy. The trainer said:

"This victory will remain as one of the most significant moments of my career. I won on the dam, who was the very first horse acquired by Sheikh Joaan, on the advice of Nicolas de Watrigant. So together we combined to win this race. It was an emotionally charged win, granted the presence of the Sheikh and whole Al Shaqab team who bred her. Everybody is delighted. She is very good and could even have taken on the colts. She is a backward type and that is why I decided to bypass certain races so as not to subject her to the heat. She is quite a heavily built filly and, as yet, not fully mature. When they are that good, they don’t need to run that often. Her future is already mapped out for her. At a purely mental level,

Al Haffanah reminds me of her dam in that she is easy going, calm and playful. She has also inherited her mother’s powers of acceleration. She hails from a superb line of the Mousli breeding academy." When approached ten days after the race, Thomas Fourcy told us that Al Haffanah is going to be trained with her four-year-old career very much in mind. Consequently, she will give the Breeders’ Cup at Toulouse a miss. She is also unlikely to be seen out at Doha.

You can’t fault their efforts

The racing manager of Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Thierry Delègue, said of Bayan and Baseel: "They both ran very well and were simply beaten by a superior filly. We have no excuses. The winner had impressed on a prior start and confirmed her quality. Bayan should develop into a very good four-year-old. They have both earned a rest."

Hailing from a very distinguished ‘Mousli’ line

Al Shaqab’s Al Haffanah spent her early days at the Haras du Grand Courgeon nursery. She is the first foal of Al Nachmiya (Azadi), the winner of the Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr. I PA) plus the Prix Nefta and the Prix de l'Élevage (Gr. IIs PA). She represents one of the great ‘Mousli’ lines. The grandam Amira Al Chame (Kesberoy) was the source of four black type performers, including Al Sabeq (Tidjani): successful in the Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Challenge Round I (Gr. I PA). The others are Al Sabika (Akbar), second in the Prix Razzia III (Gr. III PA), Al Chahira (Al Saoudi), the Critérium des Pouliches (Gr. II PA) runner-up, plus Niddal (Majd Al Arab) who took minor honours in the Prix Tidjani (Gr. III PA).  This is the family of Salma (Tidjani), Hatta International Stakes (Gr. I PA) second, and Alep Alchame (Kesberoy), Prix Dragon (Gr. I PA) third, plus Al Fahda (Azadi) who proved successful in the Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr. I PA).
