MAJD AL ARAB PUREBRED ARABIAN SPRINTER CHAMPIONSHIP - Al Muntathar continues his upward ascent

DOHA (QAT), 10th January 2019

Gr. III PA - 4-year-olds and up - 1,100 m - QAR 200,000

Only seventh in this same Sprinter Championship (Gr. III PA) last year, Al Muntathar

(Af Albahar) has looked a different horse this season. He had run a number of good races before disappointing over a distance that was too long for him. Back over a sprint trip, he showed his finishing qualities by getting up close home to record the first PA Group success of his career. At the age of six, he has only visited the racecourse ten times, during which time he has recorded three wins.

Kasser (Af Albahar) set the tempo and, for a long time, appealed as the likely winner in the straight before Al Muntathar stole his thunder in the final metres. Another to have made headway from the rear, Bint Al Akaber (Af Albahar) was a creditable third under French rider Ryan Curatolo. Caïd de l'Ardus (Mahabb), the defending champion, had to settle for fourth after having had his place prospects dashed in the dying throes of the race.

From a line bearing the 'Saint Faust' imprint

Al Muntathar is a son of French-based sire Af Albahar (Amer), with the latter based at the Haras de Thouars. The dam Intifadah (Amer) won eight races in Qatar. Histoire de Faust (Tidjani), the grandam, is a half-sister to the multiple winning Saint Faust (Nuits St Georges), whose roll of honour includes the Coupe Goffs France (Gr. I PA) at Maisons-Laffitte for trainer Georges Mikhalides. This is the female line of the high class Makzan (Manganate), whose nineteen career wins included several Group I PA prizes, and notably the Zaabeel International Stakes and the Al Nahyan International at Kempton, as well as the Qatar Arabian Derby and the International Turf Cup Stakes.
