THE LATE SHEIKH JASSIM BIN MOHAMMED AL THANI TROPHY- QATAR NATIONAL DAY TROPHY - The high class Yazeed finishes like the proverbial rocket

DOHA (QAT), 16th December 2018

Gr. II PA - 3-year-olds and up - 2,000m - QAR 365,000

Not seen out since finishing fifth in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr. I PA) at ParisLongchamp, Yazeed (Munjiz) made a winning return to the familiar stage that is Doha  by annexing the Late Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Al Thani Trophy - Qatar National Day Trophy (Gr. II PA). The Alban de Mieulle runner carries the colours of his breeder, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani, and beat Gazwan (Amer), the winner of this race in 2016, by a short head. Ebraz (Amer) completed the placings in third.

A finishing burst with a difference

Gazwan was smartest into his stride and he wasted no time in dictating terms under Ryan Curatolo. The rail-hugging Yazeed gave chase in second with Spaghetti (Snoopi) racing on his outside. On entering the straight, Spaghetti attempted to pressurise the front runner whereas Yazeed, all dressed up with nowhere to go, found himself trapped on the inside. Consequently, the latter’s rider, Ronan Thomas, had to wait before the gaps came his way. After finally getting the split, Yazeed made good headway, whereas Spaghetti weakened, and Ebraz, in the thick of it, also made up ground. The author of a decisive finishing burst, Yazeed

nailed Gazwan on the line. Ebraz ran on for third as Spaghetti was relegated into fourth. Clearly, a mixture of inspiration and sang froid was required in order to triumph in such a manner.

The victory enabled Ronan Thomas to record his ninth win of the season at Doha. One should also note that the mounts of the French quartet, and for this read Ronan Thomas, Ryan Curatolo, Théo Bachelot and Mathieu Pelletan, filled four of the first five places. The winning trainer, Alban de Mieulle, said: "It’s something special to be able to beat Gazwan and Ebraz, two of the best Purebred Arabians on the world stage, and above all on a special occasion that is National Day. As there were only seven runners, one had reason to fear the possibility of getting caught out in a tactical race. Furthermore, when I saw that Yazeed was boxed-in, I thought to myself ‘Oh God’, but the horse managed to extricate himself and win well at the death." The French trainer was recording back to back wins in this event after the 2017 success of TM Thunder Struck (Majd Al Arab). During the course of the last six seasons, the handler has come up trumps four times. His roll of honour reads Yazeed, TM Thunder Struck (2017 and 2015) and Muntasar (2013).

A world class pedigree

Yazeed, a son of the renowned sire Munjiz (Kesberoy), hails from the breeding academy of

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani. He spent his early days at the Haras du Grand Courgeon. The dam, Al Dahma (Amer), won twenty-five races from the ages of three to eight. She recorded notable wins in the Coupe d’Europe des Chevaux Arabes (three times), the French Arabian Breeders’ Cup Mile, The Emir’s Sword (twice), The Qatar International Trophy (four times), The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani Trophy, The Qatar National (Day Trophy) at Doha (twice), The Dubai International Stakes,The President Cup and The Malazgirt Trophy (Gr. Is PA). After Yazeed, Al Dahma generated Marid (TM Fred Texas), a very good winner of the Al Rayyan Cup - Prix Kesberoy (Gr. I PA). General (Amer), a full brother to Al Dahma, stands as a stallion at the Haras du Grand Courgeon. A champion in his own right, he numbers two wins in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr. I PA).
