Al Zahir retains his crown

ABU DHABI (UAE), SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10th, 2019

H.H THE PRESIDENT CUP (GR1 PA)

Gr1 PA – 5-y-o and up – 2,200m – 2.500.000 AED

Al Zahir retains his crown

An easy winner of The H.H. The President Cup (Gr1 PA) in 2018, Al Zahir(Madjani) had been starved of success this season until now. Racing in standard blinkers for the first time, he carried too many guns for Al Shamoos(No Risk Al Maury) in the straight. Darius du Paon(No Risk Al Maury) was third. Af Mahshoum(Af Al Buraq), who races in the same colours and shares the same trainer as Al Zahir, set the tempo. The latter wisely bided his time – a comment that also applies to Al Shamoos – before making headway on the outside in the final bend. Al Zahir then took the lead - whereas Al Shamoos seemed to be travelling very well within herself. Trained by Charles Gourdain, the latter tried to overhaul the winner only to come up against a tenacious Al Zahir as the latter successfully defended his title.

Following in the hoofprints of Madjani.By scoring a repeat success in The H.H. The President Cup, Al Zahir emulated a feat that was achieved by his sire: the renowned Madjani(Tidjani). The number one rider of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Jim Crowley said: « We put the blinkers on, he had them on for the first-time today and, as with a lot of Arabians, they really helped. I went quite early on him, I knew he stayed very well. I had to make a bit of a move about halfway down the back, as I was stuck behind one that was coming back to me, but when we went for home he wasn’t for catching. It’s a great race and a pleasure to win it twice, as it’s not an easy race to win. »

Al Shamoos is second on her return. Underthe race conditions the mare was set to carry 55kgs, but the hot favourite’s impost was actually 56kgs as a result of Christophe Soumillon putting up overweight. Having last raced in November, Al Shamoos had kept her powder dry in the intervening period until returning to action on Sunday, February 10th, which incidentally also marked her first attempt over 2.200m. Her trainer, Charles Gourdain, said of the runner-up: «After an absence of three months from the racecourse, and taking into account the quality of the opposition, it was a very good performance – and one which shouldenable her to step up in the season ahead.» When asked before the race whether a tilt at the Kahayla Classic was on the cards, the Pau handler added: « We need to see how the mare runs. However, if she turns in a decent performance why not – granted that she has been entered [for this race]. »

A winning formula that is 100 per cent, "FR", Shadwell and Saint-Faust.Al Zahir is a son of the ‘Shadwell’ sire Madjani (Tidjani): a resident of the Haras de Saint-Faust. The latter became the first triple Gr1 PA winning son of his sire Flipper. The President Cup second and third are also by a Shadwell stallion based at Saint Faust: No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy). The stock of stallions with a purely French pedigree has resulted in three placegetters/winners at Gr1 PA level: Al Shamoos, Barnamaj and Darius du Paon.

From the line of Royal Class. Al Zahir was bred by Haras de Pourquarens in France, and hails from the Xavière Ducoloner Cauhape academy. The dam, Petite Class (Barour de Cardonne), was unraced but she has producedPetitelaïka (Robbie): third in the Shadwell-Prix Razzia III (Gr3 PA). The grandam, Hammdie Class (Dormane), has generated Royal Class (Kesberoy): successful in both The Jumeirah Group International Stakes (Gr3 PA) and The Arabian Triple Crown Round II (Gr3 PA) at Newbury and Abu Dhabi respectively. The maternal lines traces back to Bergeronnette (Djouran) – an ancestress of the high class Dahor de Brugère (Dahess); unbeaten in four starts at three which included two Group 1 PA wins; and Mahess du Soleil(Dahess): the UK Arabian Derby (Gr1 PA) victor.
