Bayan and Ioritz Mendizabal give their rivals the run around

TOULOUSE (FR), JUNE 2th 2019

QATAR PRIX DE L'ELEVAGE

Gr2 PA - 4-year-olds - 2,000m - € 25,000

Bayan and Ioritz Mendizabal give their rivals the run around

Bayan (Munjiz) opened her group PA account after taking the Qatar Prix de l'Élevage (Gr2 PA). The third choice of the punters in the betting, the filly made all in the 2.000m race. After a number of placed efforts at group PA level, the Frédéric Sanchez runner scored a convincing win in the colours of her breeder Yas Horse Racing: the racing operation of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Every post a winning one. Having made a beeline for the lead under Ioritz Mendizabal, Bayan set the tempo. However, it was hardly a taxing one although she opened up a clear lead over the chasing Raahah (Asraa Min Albarq). Al Haffanah (Amer), the hot favourite, was content to sit in second last place and she had the only one remaining class act in the field, Al Ryma Monlau (Runner), behind her. Making up the leeway with a group 1 PA class filly on a sound surface is very difficult and it’s the reason why Olivier Peslier, showing all his experience, reasoned that he shouldn’t give Bayan too much rope up front. Consequently, he took much closer order on Adiba (Burning Sand) down the backstraight. However, the pacesetter never wavered in her efforts, and when both Al Ryma Monlau and Al Haffanah got going in the straight, it was too late to affect the outcome. Bayan showed the way home to Adiba by a length. Making her seasonal debut, Al Haffanah was third with Al Ryma Monlau a place further behind in fourth.

Fitness and blinkers play their part. As Alec Head was fond of reminding us, you can give away weight but not ground in a race. However, this isn’t the full picture when it comes to dissecting the victory of Bayan. As the filly falls into the category of a class act with a racing record to match, and notably her second spot in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA) in 2018. Bayan had the advantage of already being very fit on June 2nd, having come off a win in Rome. Fitted in blinkers for the second time, she turned the tables on Al Haffanah who had easily taken her measure at Saint-Cloud last year.

Heading to Newbury. Thierry Delègue, the racing manager of Yas Horse Racing, said: «She’s a filly blessed with an extraordinary turn of foot and with a stride to match.  She was also very well ridden and Ioritz Mendizabal managed to get her to settle in front. She also got a ‘breather’ during the race and, on this particular Toulouse card [June 2], horses weren’t winning from off the pace. She also gave generously of her herself in terms of effort. We are over the moon as this attractive filly deserved a win of this nature. The blinkers help her to concentrate and to give more generously of herself [in terms of effort]. However, she was again very willing and this was something which her rider confirmed. It’s not a case of her not being willing enough, but of the blinkers improving her concentration levels, as granted her restricted vision due to the headgear, she is unlikely to be unaware of potential dangers lurking from off the pace, and which could otherwise upset her ebb and flow. It enables her to focus more on the job at hand. She should be heading to a Group 1 PA contest at Newbury. She is generous by nature and it’s worth a crack. We don’t have much choice now that she is a Gr2 PA winner. »

A grandaughter of Amidou Douzaia. Bayan is the best advertisement to date of her unraced dam Mowafaka (Tidjani). Amidou Douzaia (Chéri Bibi) is the grandam and ten black type winners trace back to her. She has produced Salaamah (Njewman), the winner of the Emirates Equestrian Federation Stakes (Gr2 PA) at Newbury; and Aliaa (Djelfor), the dam of Abhaar (Al Nasr): the Emirates Championship (Gr1 PA) hero; her production line is also responsible for Aryaan (Kesberoy) who has generated Naseem (Mahabb): the winner of the Al Maktoum Challenge R1 (Gr1 PA) and the President Cup (Gr1 PA); plus Dahwa (Tidjani), the Prix de l'Élevage (Gr2 PA) heroine, and the dam of Najah (Munjiz : a triple Group PA winner including the Prix Nefta (Gr2 PA) at the same Toulouse track. Dahwa is also the dam Bandar (Munjiz), a winner on Toulouse circuit in addition to capturing the Grand Prix de Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed VI (Gr3 PA); last but not least, Thabit (Munjiz) made his mark in the Coupe du Sud-Ouest des pur-sang arabes (Gr3 PA) at La Teste-de-Buch. The great grandam has produced Tessadite (Tidjani) – The President of The UAE Challenge Derby third at Newmarket.
