PREMIO MILANO JOCKEY CLUB STAKES (Gr3 PA) - Hajres lands his fifth Group PA success!

SAN SIRO (ITY), SUNDAY OCTOBER 20th 2019

Despite racing on a waterlogged track, the Élisabeth Bernard runner Hajres (Nizam)

proved equal to the task after landing the Premio Milano Jockey Club Stakes (Gr3 PA) by a head. He gained his fifth group PA win after taking the measure of the Frédéric Sanchez-trained Ibn Gadir (Mared Al Sahra). After initially sitting in second last position, Hajres made a forward move rounding the final bend. Delaying his challenge until the last possible moment, the mount of Olivier Peslier prevailed in the final strides. Bred by the Haras Ahmed Essaied, the winner carries the colours of Emadadein Alhtoushi. Élisabeth Bernard, the winning trainer, said: "Hajres didn’t have his ground and was giving weight all round but, despite this, he won! Olivier Peslier made sure that his mount got up on the line – an art he is well versed in. I’m over the moon that a Tunisian born and bred horse has been able to score five Group wins in as many different countries: Tunisia, Morocco, France, Britain and now Italy. It’s quite rare and a great achievement. A charming horse and a good looking type at that, he gives of himself generously. He was a very sick horse last year in August, having contracted the most virulent form of equine rhinopneumonitis, which affects the nerves. It was quite a struggle to get him back. As regards his race programme, I’ve been studiously avoiding the best horses as, for me, he is still finding his feet. If all goes well next season, I would like to head in the direction of a top prize such as the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA)."
