AL MAKTOUM CHALLENGE ROUND 2 - ZIYAD RECORDS A SECOND GR1 PA WIN AT MEYDAN
MEYDAN (UAE), JANUARY 30th 2020
Gr1 PA - 5-year-olds-and up - 1,900m (1m, 1f and 110 yds) - $75,000
Following his excellent return second at Meydan on December 19th, Ziyadd (Bibi de Carrère)
logically stepped up on that effort by recording an impressive success in Round 2 of the Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr1 PA). Ziyadd is trained by French national Jean de Roüalle on behalf of Yas Racing. Ziyadd was well away but Bandar (Munjiz) attempted to throw a spanner in his works by making all. Af Al Sajanjle (Af Al Buraq) raced on the outside of Ziyadd, whereas Amwaj (Abu Alemarat) missed the break and found herself among the backmarkers in tandem with Cheik Roque (Dahess). In the latter stages, Ziyadd went on the offensive and took the measure of the determined leader. He was never to be headed as Bandar kept on for second. Amwaj finished fast into third. She will undoubtedly be seen to better advantage over a slightly longer trip.
A GOOD OMEN
Having already annexed the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 at this same Meydan track two years ago, Ziyadd was gaining his second Gr1 PA win. His jockey told our Dubai Racing TV: colleagues: "Things didn’t go according to plan. I had set out to make a beeline for the lead but Fernando [editor's note: Jara, the jockey of Bandar] decided to make the running. Happily, we were able to sit in his slipstream, and I made my winning move earlier than planned as my horse was travelling so easily. This was despite the straight being a long one and particularly so for PA horses." It’s a good omen prior to what will almost certainly amount to a third attempt at the Dubai Kahyala Classic (Gr1 PA) towards the end of March.
BRED TO WIN THE KAHAYLA CLASSIC
Ziyadd is a son of the high class distaffer Mizzna (Akbar) – the winner of the 2008 edition of the Dubai Kahayla Classic for French handler Éric Lemartinel. She has also foaled other class acts in the image of Rabbah de Carrère (Bibi de Carrère), the winner of the aforementioned
Gr1 Dubai feature in 2014! The grandam, Unchainedd Melody (ZT Ali Baba), completed a hat-trick of Kahayla Classic wins in the 1997-1999 period.
