PRIX DAMAS: the class of Bel'Izam tells

TOULOUSE (FR), May 31st, 2020

Gr3 PA - 4-year-olds & up – 1,600m (1m) - €20,000

Unraced since his second place in the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown (Gr1 PA) at Abu Dhabi in November 2019, Bel’Izam (Nizam) was entitled to be a little ring rusty. However, the Damien de Watrigant charge showed enough class and this enabled him to dominate a tenacious Hilal Al Cham (Hilal Al Zaman) in the dying strides, and land the Prix Damas (Gr3 PA) under Jean-Bernard Eyquem. Bel’Izam carries the colours of Sheikh Rashid Hamdan Rashid Al Maktoum, and son of Sheikh Hamdan, who ‘gifted’ the horse prior to the above mentioned big event at Abu Dhabi in November. Having made headway from the rear, Amjiz de Piboul (Munjiz) was noted doing his best work in the straight and he snatched third off Nenawa (Dahess).

Not firing on all cylinders. The winning trainer Damien de Watrigant told Equidia: "His quality carried him to victory despite the fact that he was still carrying some condition. It was red-letter day for the Haras de Mandore plus Sheikh Hamdan and his son. These owners

have supported the yard for a long time now. AFAC and its president have successfully managed to ensure a race programme that is consistent, which has demanded considerable effort in these particular times. I hope that everyone is happy. These speedy types are used to campaigning abroad and notably in Britain. Although there is a race programme for them currently in France in the form of future Listed races."

The full brother of Sahabba. Bred by the Haras de Mandore, Bel’Izam is a son of the Italian-based sire Nizam (Amer), where the HM3 Equine Breeding Society stand him on behalf of Umm Qarn. He was acquired by the Mandore International Agency for €110,000 at the Arqana sales. The dam, Djesabelle (Dormane), won six races including the Prix Dragon (Gr1 PA) and generated Sahabba (Nizam). The latter won the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup (Gr3 PA) at Ostend, and was second in the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown (Gr1 PA) at Abu Dhabi. Cherifa (Chéri Bibi), the grandam, triumphed in both the Dubai Stakes and the Coupe du Cheval Arabe (Grs1 PA). Around 20 of her descendants have gone on to gain black type, including Mushrae (Arabian World Cup & Arabian Trophy des Poulains, Grs1 PA). This is the renowned line which we readily associate with the De Watrigant breeding academy, and is responsible for elite stallions such as Dormane (Manganate) and Manganate (Saint Laurent).
