THE PRESIDENT OF THE UAE CUP - COUPE D'EUROPE DES CHEVAUX ARABES: Deryan doesn’t have to dig deep to savour Gr1 PA success despite a few flutters

DEAUVILLE (FR), JUNE 1st 2020

Gr1 PA - 4-year-olds & up - 2,000m - €100,000

Having been placed three times at this level, Deryan (Mahabb) snared his first Gr1 PA success by annexing the President of the UAE Cup - Coupe d'Europe des Chevaux Arabes.

In a race in which Ibn Gadir (Mared al Sahra) dictated terms, and the four other runners followed in Indian file, Deryan (Mahabb) sat in second last place. In the straight, Ioritz Mendizabal held on to his mount for as long as possible before calling upon the Didier Guillemin runner for his effort. Going to the final 100m, the future winner inched into a narrow lead after joining issue with Melabi (Dahess). Deryan went on to master Melabi by a neck, but the winning margin didn’t reflect his superiority. Hajres (Nizam) was third as Ibn Gadir and Shalaa (Dahess) rounded out the finishing order.

Harbouring international ambitions…Thierry Delègue, the racing manager of His Highness heikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nayhan, the owner-breeder of the winner, said: "We’re always a little apprehensive as the horse tends to idle once he hits the front. The game plan worked well as he needs to be produced at the last moment. He’s finally opened his Gr1 PA account. The two jockeys, Ioritz Mendizabal (Deryan) and Émilien Révolte (Ibn Gadir), both did a good job. The 2,000m (10f) trip is as far as he cares to go. We’re not sure where the horse will be heading next. He could be aimed at the Jewel Crown over a mile, the big PA race on the Saudi Cup card as he acts well on sand, and there’s also the option of a top race in the United Arab Emirates. However, we have plenty of time to think it over. It’s great to see Emirati colours shine in the President of the UAE Cup. They’re faithful and much valued sponsors."

Melabi has scope for improvement. Thomas Fourcy added: "Deryan was tough to beat on paper. Melabi was coming off a poor display on his seasonal debut but he has been thriving on the gallops. The horse has yet to reach peak condition but, even if he had been firing on all cylinders, he would have made a race of it with the winner but nothing more. Shalaa went to Qatar during the winter and needs a break. It’s not easy making plans for these horses granted the difficulty of travelling horses in Europe."

Delivering the goods two years after Shahm. Deryan was bred in France by Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nayhan. Deryan is out of Haboob (Akbar) who was second in the Qatar French Arabian Breeders' Cup for 3-year-olds females (Gr1 PA) at ParisLongchamp. She has produced Shahm (Mahabb), the President of the UAE Cup - Coupe d'Europe des Chevaux Arabes (Gr1 PA) winner, the Critérium des Pouliches and the Qatar Prix de l'Élevage (Grs2 PA) placed Yathrib (Munjiz).

The grandam produced the Emirates Equestrian Federation Stakes (Gr2 PA) winning Salaamah (Njewman) at Newbury. Her name also features in the pedigrees of Abhaar  (Al nasr), the Emirates Championship (Gr1 PA) winner; Naseem (Mahabb), whose roll of honour comprises the Al Maktoum Challenge R1 and the President Cup (Grs1 PA); Dahwa (Tidjani),  successful in the Prix de l'Élevage (Gr2 PA); Najah (Munjiz), a top 4-year-old distaff performer whose triumph in the Prix Nefta (Gr2 PA) on her 2019 return was gained the main expense of older members of the fairer sex, plus Thabit (Munjiz) and Bandar (Munjiz).
