Sparkling beam prevents a duel

?is F-level maiden race promised a

duel between the second-place finisher in the Prix du Lisieux (F), Galateia

(Dansili), and the second-place finisher in the Prix des Marettes (F), Monsoon

(Cape Cross). But the battle never happened and the two fillies had to be

content with places on the

below the winne Sparkling Beam (Nayef). Sparkling Beam idled behind the field

and waited for Galateia to launch the attack. ?e daughter of Gagnoa (Sadler’s Wells) steamed ahead like a winner in the

stretch, but Sparkling Beam, a very tough filly, stuck with her and dug in to

get her head in front at the post. ?is was the third race for Sparkling

Beam, who last finished second in Lion d'Angers, where she took too much time

to hit her stride and could not catch Vilna (Slickly). Sparkling Beam's jockey,

Ronan ?omas, said "Last time I was so

frustrated in Lion d'Angers, because just past the post I was in front. Here,

we had a good entry, but we were worried about Galateia. Sparkling Beam showed

real class. She fought with the favorite and beat her."

But even in

defeat, Galateia showed she is a quality filly. She set herself up for a

near-impossible task by taking the lead at the head of the stretch a?er running near the back of the field.
