Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards Stakes (Gr. I PA) - A SUCCESSFUL FIRST FOR VICTOR ESPINOZA

Santa Anita (USA), 1st April 2017. Winner of the American Triple Crown with American Pharaoah in 2015 – a first in 37 years – the jockey Victor Espinoza succeeded for his first race with a Purebred Arabian. Riding Paddys Day (Burning Sand), crowned horse of the year during the Darley Awards ceremony, he won very easily these Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards Stakes (Gr. I PA) on the dirt of Santa Anita. The jockey explained: “For the past 20 or 30 years, I thought I knew everything but this was my first experience with a Purebred Arabian. He never let go like a Thoroughbred can do sometimes. He was full of energy in the last turn. We just had to find our way through. It is an honour to participate in such a race.” Victor Espinoza also made a donation of the $ 150,000 given by the Sheikh Mansoor Festival to the injured American jockeys’ support fund. Surprisingly defeated in the first edition of this race, Paddys Day answered back this time, pleasing Scott Powell, recent winner of the trainer of the year title at the Darley Awards: “We thought we’d win last year and we ended up second so we are very happy to win today. The horse really set the record straight again.”
