H.H. SHEIKH ABDULLAH BIN KHALIFA AL THANI CUP - Ebraz proves too strong over a mile

DOHA (QAT), 10th January 2019

Gr. II PA - 4-year-olds and up - 1,600m - QAR 300,000

After returning to the distance of his last success at Doha, Ebraz (Amer) showed the powers of acceleration worthy of the very best following his win in the H.H. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani Cup (Gr. II PA), a race in which Tayf (Amer) was kept at arm’s length. Spaghetti (Snoopi) filled the places in third. It marked Ebraz’s fourth win at Group PA level. He is trained by Julian Smart on behalf of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani, who is also the breeder.

A few scares along the way

Carab (Majd Al Arab) set the tempo as Évolution du Croate (Dahess) raced on his outside. Meanwhile, Ebraz waited in last place. Leaving the final bend, Easter de Faust (Mahabb) made a forward move on the outside with Tayf content to follow him through. Having bided his time, Ebraz initially made headway through the middle of the pack before being switched to the inside for his effort. He won in good style despite the pleasing finish of Tayf. Spaghetti snared third although he was safely held by the principals. The winning trainer, Julian Smart, was a relieved man and he said: "If Ebraz gets beaten it’s my fault and, if Ebraz wins, it is as expected. The pace was a quick one and, the quicker the tempo, the better it was for my horse. He even went so far as to wrap up the race up too easily and too quickly. When he hits the front, it’s as if he is saying to himself ‘That’s it. I’ve done my job’. He has a tendency to do this by easing up somewhat. He gave me a scare."

To watch the race :

Hailing from an illustrious French female line

Being out of the broodmare Massamarie (Tidjani), Ebraz is a full brother to Mared Al Sahra: the winner of the Emir’s Sword (Gr. I PA) turned stallion. He is also a full brother of

Mu’Azzaz, the Shadwell Dubai International Stakes (Gr. I PA) winner, and Metrag. The latter proving victorious in the Grand Prix de Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed VI (Gr. III PA) at Casablanca in November. Margau (Manganate), the grandam of Ergau, is a full sister to those high class acts Dormane and Djendel. She also generated Santhal (Djebbel) whose six wins took in Round III of the Maktoum Challenge (Gr. I PA).

The great grandam is none other than Mandore (Grabiec), one of the foundation mares of the French PA breeding industry.
