THE WORD OF AFAC - Five dates not to be missed in the second half of the season

La Teste-de-Buch racecourse will integrate the Dubai International Arabians Races (DIAR) circuit for a third time on July 2nd. This meeting features three sponsored races: the Shadwell-Bengali d’Albret, the Shadwell-Critérium des Pouliches (Gr2 PA) and the Shadwell-Coupe du Sud-Ouest des Pur-sang Arabes (Gr3 PA).

The new look French Arabian Breeders’ Challenges. An integral and prestigious part of the calendar, the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenges have undergone a makeover in 2019. Jean-Luc Jardel, the founding father and former AFAC president, was the driving force behind this idea. The concept came to fruition at Toulouse on June 29th, 2004. Longchamp and Saint-Cloud (for three-year-old races) also acted as host sites for the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenges, before the event came full circle by returning to Toulouse in 2011. At the outset, AFAC assumed entire responsibility regarding financing, but alternative income streams in the form of sponsorship and owners’ contributions have since come into play. Previously, all races in this particular bracket were staged on a single ‘Premium’ racecard. However, the status of the meeting has changed to P.M.H. status whereby the betting market is exclusively an on course one. This change has forced us to revise the racing dates of this event. The main aim has been to maintain the profile of this particular ‘shop window’ for the benefit of the breeders, owners, trainers and sponsors. Consequently, the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenges which will be run on three separate racedays in 2019.

The opportunity of bypassing the full entry fee for the four above races is open to AFAC members, as they have the option of entering

their charges as yearlings at the very reasonable rate of € 200. These ‘entries’ are valid for life and are transferable in the event of a change of ownership.  For non AFAC members, or those wishing to enter after the ‘yearling’ stage, entries can be made through France Galop at a cost of € 800. Failing that, horses can be supplemented for a fee of € 3,000, again via France Galop.

The French Arabian Breeders’ Challenges are also the opportunity for AFAC and its membership to get together, and our General Assembly will

take place separately to the meeting on Friday, September 6th. Our traditional and much vaunted stallion nominations’ ballot will coincide

with the running of the final PA Group race of the season, the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge Classic - Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, on Thursday, October 31st.

The Saint-Cloud sales. In the lead up to the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend, the PA sale Saint-Cloud racecourse will take place on Thursday, October 3rd. This annual event is the focal point for the professionals and those passionate about the Purebred Arabian in France and throughout the world. Entries for the sale close on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2019.
