Gr1 PA - 4-year-olds and up - 1,600m (1m) - $250,000

Al Shahania Stud set out its stall on the Doha Saturday card in the best possible fashion thanks to the victory of Methgal (TM Fred Texas) in the Qatar International Cup (Gr1 PA, 1m). Seventh on his racecourse debut in the Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes (Gr2 PA, 1m) on June 21st at Chantilly last season, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s homebred standardbearer subsequently trotted up by just over six lengths in the DIAR International Stakes (Gr3 PA, 7f) at Newbury. His subsequent two attempts, both over 10f in France, proved inconclusive. Consequently, Julian Smart decided that a return to Qatar was called for, as there would be more opportunities for him over a mile. His performances at Doha have seen him constantly on the upgrade, and he had run fourth in the Qatar Derby (Gr1 PA, 1m) in December, prior to winning a handicap and the Qatar International Cup!

Displaying a remarkable turn of foot. Al Naama (Majd Al Arab), second in the 2019 edition of the Qatar International Cup, was the favourite of this year’s renewal. After landing a Doha hat-trick over a mile, she had also beaten Ebraz (Amer) and Tayf (Amer) on her most recent run. However, she didn’t prove equal to the task on this occasion, and after racing in mid-division which didn’t bode well for her chances, she turned in a below par effort. Shalaa (Dahess), having kicked for home early under Julien Augé, gave his all and was still in the lead going to the final 150m. However, we hadn’t reckoned with the power-packed finish of Methgal, and, responding to the energetic promptings of Maxime Guyon, the winner swooped to conquer in the final 100m. Shalaa was beaten a length into second, as Marid (TM Fred Texas) was left to collect third – over two lengths further back.

Finding his niche. Julian Smart said: "I think that we have two rising stars in the yard: Mon'nia (Amer), a winner on the Thursday card, and Methgal. He ran an absolute blinder and was given a peach of a ride by Maxime Guyon. You simply don’t win the French jockeys’ championship by sheer luck! He had previous experience of riding Methgal in France, but over 2.000m (10f) and on a soft track. The horse wasn’t disgraced but his rightful distance remains the Doha mile. He was the youngest contender in the Qatar International Cup. He is still only a 4-year-old and has his whole future ahead of him. We can certainly look to the future with him. I don’t think that he will be campaigned in Europe."

Out of a full sister to Ebraz. Methgal was bred at the Haras des Cruchettes by Al Shahania. His sire, TM Fred Texas (Burning Sand), has again underscored his remarkable record in the breeding shed. The Al Shaqab Racing sire stands at the Haras de Thouars. The dam Theeba (Amer) is the property of the Du Soleil Stud. She is a full sister to the winner of the 2019 edition of the Emir's Sword, Ebraz (Amer), which the latter preceded with third in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Grs1 PA). Ebraz is a full brother to Mared Al Sahra, a fellow winner of the Emir's Sword, plus Mu'Azzaz, the Shadwell Dubai International Stakes (Gr1 PA) hero, and Metrag. The latter captured the Grand Prix de Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed VI (Gr3 PA) at Casablanca in November 2016. The grandam is a full sister to those high class acts: Dormane (Manganate) and Djendel (Manganate). In the breeding shed, she produced

the classy Santhal (Djebbel), whose six wins included the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (Gr1 PA). The great grandam is none other than Mandore (Grabiec) – the great mare which we readily associate with the Watrigant breeding academy.
