QATAR PRIX DE L'ÉLEVAGE: Hayyan delivers an incredible performance

TOULOUSE (FR), MAY 11th, 2020

Gr2 PA - 4-year-olds and up - 2,000m (10f) - €25,000

A triple PA Group winner, which includes a pair of wins at the highest level over 2,000m (10f), Hayyan (Munjiz) was making his seasonal debut in the Qatar Prix de l'Élevage (Gr2 PA) on this Tuesday card at Toulouse, where the rains had made for very testing conditions.

Ridden by Anthony Crastus, the Frédéric Sanchez runner languished in the second half of the field, as Ibn Gadir (Mared Al Sahra), in the same ownership as the winner, tugged the field along. Progressively making up ground, the future winner moved to within striking distance of the leaders on the final bend, before thrusting his head in front going to the final 200m. From that point, he turned the race on its head by leaving the second toiling nine lengths in his wake. Kair Al Cham (Dahess) was second. Deryan (Mahabb) was a further two lengths away in third.

Having further scope for improvement! Thierry Delègue, the racing manager of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said: "The performance gains added kudos as he wasn’t in tip-top condition. However, he’s certainly a horse which runs well when fresh. He is a more mature horse and has become easier to handle. Noticeably relaxed on Monday, he went on to deliver in great style. Clearly he’s an extraordinary horse. Going forward, it’s going to prove problematic establishing a race programme for him. As there are only three races prior to the big race on the Arc de Triomphe weekend. Granted that the situation outside France is anything but clear, he could head to Deauville. We’re at a loss to explain his below par effort at Abu Dhabi. Deryan didn’t care for the bad ground at Toulouse, which is something which probably applies to others in this Group contest."

So why not win try to win the Qatar Arabian World Cup?  Frédéric Sanchez, the winning trainer said: "He set the standard. He was a dual Gr1 PA winner last season, having collected in the French and English Derbies. He wasn’t 100 % and was carrying a two kilo (4lb) penalty. The plan is to finish in the first three in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA)…and why not try to win it! Anthony Crastus did a good job of getting his mount to switch off, as the horse can race keenly. The horse really moved up a gear – much to the delight of his jockey. The rider gave him a smack with his whip at my suggestion, which was to ensure that the horse didn’t stop once he hit the front. He wanted to take no chances but, in any case, the horse would have won under a hand and heels ride. This race wasn’t his target as he was only 70 % to 80 % fit coming into the race. He astonished me as I didn’t think he would win as he did. »

A son of the exceptional Dahwa. The dam of Dahwa (Tidjani) captured the Prix de l’Élevage (Gr2 PA). Her first offering, Thabit (Munjiz), captured the Coupe du Sud-Ouest des Pur-Sang Arabes (Gr3 PA). Bandar (Munjiz), her second product, won the Grand Prix de Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed VI (Gr3 PA). Najah (Munjiz), her third foal, landed the Prix Nefta (Gr2PA) and the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge-Pouliches (Gr2 PA). She was also third in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA). Hayyan is her fourth foal.

Ten of the descendants of the grandam, Amidou Douzaia (Chéri Bibi), went on to secure black type. She is also the dam of the Emirates Equestrian Federation Stakes (Gr2 PA) winning Salaamah (Njewman) at Newbury; plus Aliaa (Djelfor), herself the dam of the Emirates Championship (Gr1 PA) victor Abhaar (Al Nasr); whereas another of her daughters, Aryaan (Kesberoy), generated Naseem (Mahabb), whose roll of honour comprises the Al Maktoum Challenge R1and the President Cup (Gr1s PA).
