MAJD AL ARAB P/A SPRINTER CHAMPIONSHIP: ATEEJ RECORDS HIS FIRST GROUP PA WIN

DOHA (QAT), JANUARY 7th, 2020

Gr3 PA - 4-year-olds and up - 1,100m - QAR 200,000

Devoid of success since October 2019, Ateej (Af Albahar) returned to the winner’s circle following a convincing win in the Majd Al Arab P/A Sprinter Championship (Gr3 PA) (5 1/2F) for sprinters at Doha on January 7th. Trained by Jassim Al Ghazali on behalf of Mohammed Bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Attiya, the horse recorded his fifth career win, and first PA Group victory, at the age of eight.

The front running trio, Kasser (Af Albahar), Barra (Munjiz) and RB Kindle (Burning Sand), ensured that there was plenty of pace. Meanwhile, the future winner raced behind the leading group. As a result of a bonanza finish in the straight, Ateej nailed the win after sweeping past the pacesetting Kasser. RB Kindle kept third.

Ateej landed the Qatar Derby as a 3-year-old at the main expense of the crack performer Ebraz (Amer), before continuing his career in France under the aegis of François Rohaut, where he won the Prix Amer (L PA) at Craon – before finishing second in the Qatar International Cup (Gr1 PA).

The line of TM Fred Texas.  Ateej is a son of Af Albahar (Amer), a stallion resident at the Haras de Thouars. The dam, Sahara Croixnoire (Ala Croixnoire), generated the triple US winner Queen Kong (Kong). The latter foaled three black type performers, including TM Fred Texas (Burning Sand). The US PA Horse of the Year in 2011, he won 11 of his 15 career starts, including the 2012 edition of the Dubai Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA) at Meydan in the silks of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani. TM Fred Texas has since become a very successful PA sire.
