PREMIO MILANO - UAE PRESIDENT CUP STAKES: HAYYAN: THE TRAVELLER PAR EXCELLENCE NOTCHES HIS SIXTH GROUP WIN

MILAN (ITY), JUNE 27th, 2021

Gr2 PA - 4 year-olds & up - 2,000m (10f) - €35,000

Frédéric Sanchez chose to send Hayyan (Munjiz) to Italy as a good opportunity arose there. When raced in the United Arab Emirates, the horse was third in the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown (Gr1 PA) en route to tackling the Dubai Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA), which was his last outing prior to the Gr2 PA prize at San Siro, Milan. A flagbearer of Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Hayyan is an avid traveller, having won the President of the UAE Cup - UK Arabian Derby (Gr1 PA) at Doncaster, and three French PA Group races, including the Qatar Derby des 4ans and the Doha Cup - Prix Manganate (Gr1 PA).

Overcoming plenty of weight and the lack of pace. Hayyan resumed winning ways at San Siro, on Sunday, June 27th. Ioritz Mendizabal concentrated his efforts on getting his mount to switch off in the early stages, as the pacesetters, Antares del Ma (Af Albahar) and Ghurat Al Zaiman (Hilal al Zaman), set off at a hack canter. Down the backstretch, Cristian Demuro, riding Arion (Dahess) for trainer Élisabeth Bernard, took closer order, whereas Ioritz Mendizabal continued to bide his time. The race sparked to life in the last bend, and Hayyan only really got going in the final 200m. Despite hanging right, which prompted a stewards’ enquiry, Hayyan, despite his 60.5 kilos (9st 7lb) impost, got his head in front at the line after accounting for Antares del Ma. The latter carried 57.5 kilos (9st 1lb) and was beaten a length. The French-bred Arion, with 54 kilos (8st 7lb) in the saddle, was third. Hayyan, His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan flagbearer, is a very smart performer – as he’s a triple Gr1 PA scorer – but is far from being a straight forward ride.

Set to defend his Deauville title. Ioritz Mendizabal said: “The lack of pace didn’t help Hayyan. He pulled a bit before settling. His class carried him to victory although he was still taking something of a keen interest of what was going on around him at the finish.” Thierry Delegue, the owner's racing manager, told us: “He has won six Group prizes, including three Gr1 PA events. He’s a horse that has travelled a lot, and been successful to boot, even if he didn't really relish the dirt at Meydan. He won well in Milan. Making a reappearance after racing in the UAE, is never easy because you never know exactly how fit the horses really are. Hayyan fully repaid the confidence we had in him, and the extremely fast surface wasn’t ideal for him. We would also have preferred a race with more pace. Should the horse come out of the race in good order, which is likely, he should be heading to Deauville with the aim of defending his title in the Gr1 Doha Cup - Prix Manganate.

A son of the exceptional broodmare Dahwa.  Hayyan hails from one of the most successful lines of Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. As his dam, Dahwa (Tidjani), won the Prix de l'Élevage (Gr2 PA). Her first foal, Thabit (Munjiz), won the Coupe du Sud-Ouest, whereas her second offering, Bandar (Munjiz), landed the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (Gr1 PA).

Her third foal, Najah (Munjiz), proved victorious in the Prix Nefta (Gr2 PA) and the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge - Pouliches (Gr2 PA). Furthermore, she was also third in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA). Hayyan is the mare’s fourth foal. Teema (Bibi de Carrère), her fifth product, was third in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA). The grandam, Amidou Douzaia (Chéri Bibi), is notable for the fact that 15 black performers, in either the first or second removes of their pedigree page, trace back to her. Notable examples include Abhaar (Al Nasr), the winner of the Emirates Championship (Gr1 PA); Naseem (Mahabb), successful in the  Al Maktoum Challenge R1 and the President Cup (Grs1 PA); Shahm (Mahabb), winner of The President of the UAE Cup - Coupe d’Europe des Chevaux Arabes (Gr1 PA): plus Deryan (Mahabb), the victor ludorum of the Coupe d’Europe des Chevaux Arabes and the Dubai Kahayla Classic (Grs1 PA) … a list that is by no means exhaustive.
