The President of the UAE - Cup: Arion records his first PA Group win

Ostend (BE), August 2nd 2021

Gr3 PA - 4-year-olds & up - 1,800m  (9f) - €30,000

On this particular Monday card at Ostend which featured the President of the UAE - Cup (Gr3 PA), the Belgian champion Messi (Dahess) and Britain’s Mashhur Al Khalediah (Jalnar Al Khalidiah) were the outstanding contenders on the book. However, they could only respectively manage fifth and eighth. Consequently, this paved the way for the French challenge to help itself to the lion's share of the purse. There were also a few problems at the start which extended to the race itself. However, Murjan (Dahor de Brugère), Arion (Dahess) and Lamet Shamel (Af Albahar) managed to form part of the leading group as the field hit the straight, whereas the favourites back-pedalled.

Arion then took the lead and, despite the promptings of  Jean-Bernard Eyquem,  he tended to idle when in front. Although he managed to build enough of a lead which enabled him to land his first PA Group win after mastering the valiant Lamet Shamel by a neck. The French-born Freddy Py (TM Fred Texas) was two lengths further back in third.

Heading to Doncaster. Third in the Premio Milano UAE President Cup Stakes (Gr2 PA), Arion continues on an upward curve. He runs for a partnership comprising Haif Mohammed Al Ghatani, the Haras de Rabodanges and Haseg. His trainer Élisabeth Bernard said: "It's very nice to work with owners who have the best interests of their horses to heart, as it ensures that we only send horses to the racecourse when they are ready. Arion went into training late and it wasn't possible to run him as a 3-year-old. He worked well in the mornings but the afternoons proved altogether more problematic. As Arion was afraid of other horses. However, the colt has gained in confidence with his racing. It proved to be a real rough race,

and the horse got knocked about from the off – to the point where Jean-Bernard Eyquem sustained a cut chin. The colt is getting tougher and he successfully took a step forward by winning a PA Group race when pitted against a level of opposition he had never faced before. He has a superb pedigree. He could be heading for the UK Arabian Derby for 4-year-olds at Doncaster. The current division of PA 4-year-olds really seems to be exceptional. It's a vintage crop."

Lamet Shamel earns some black type. Jean de Mieulle, the trainer of the second Lamet Shamel, elaborated on the Waleed Ben Zaied representative by saying: "She ran very well and got being beaten by a very good horse in the making, and one which continues on an upward curve. Lamet Shamel has now gained black type, which is important for her future career in the paddocks as it enhances her bloodline, and it’s also a big reward for the owner. She’s an easy going and healthy mare. As things stand, we could go for a PA Group prize in Turkey. Alternatively, there is a race for her in Holland during September."

Kiss de Ghazal yields a second black type performer. Bred by Haïf Mohammed Al Ghatani, Haseg and the Haras de Rabodanges, Arion is a son of Haras de Thouars-based

sire Dahess (Amer). The dam, the high class Kiss de Ghazal (Dormane), won her first nine career starts in France and Britain. Under the aegis of trainer Jean-François Bernard, she won seven PA Group prizes, including the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge at Saint-Cloud, the Arabian Trophy at ParisLongchamp, and the UK Arabian Derby (Grs1 PA) at Ascot. She is also the dam of the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA) second Jarif (Dahess). Kiss de Ghazal has also produced a 2-year-old and four yearlings (by Dahess and Al Mourtajez).

The grandam, Kaoe de Ghazal (Kesberoy), boasts a third in the Abu Dhabi Championship as a 3-year-old at Deauville. She’s also the grandam of the Prix de l'Élevage (Gr2 PA) winning Karabosse de Ghazal (Munjiz) at Toulouse.
