Prix Nevada II: Image du Croate takes another step forward

Toulouse (FR), October 25th, 2021

Gr3 PA - 3-year-old fillies - 1,600m (8f) - €25,000

Image du Croate (Munjiz), the winner of the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA) over 2,000m on October 2nd, again came under orders, three and a half weeks after that  triumph, this time in the Prix Nevada II (Gr2 PA) over 1,600m (1m). Far from feeling the effects of her prior efforts, the representative of Sheikha Reem Bint Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani again proved tops. Maxime Guyon, the rider of the Élisabeth Bernard charge, deployed waiting tactics on the filly by holding-up his mount in mid-division. She made a forward move in the straight, in tandem with Al Wakrah (TM Fred Texas), who got squeezed between ‘horses’ in the initial stages which relegated her to last position. Al Wakrah almost drew upsides, but the renewed impetus of Image du Croate saw her pull out more for a neck win over her rival. The always prominent Thi Qar (AF Albahar) was three lengths further back in third.

Very emotional in the wake of her charge’s win, Élisabeth Bernard told the Equidia channel: "I was so afraid of making a mistake: by backing up the filly three weeks after her Gr1 PA triumph, which could seem greedy. However, the filly was on such good terms with herself in the mornings, and, so much so, that I couldn't see her remaining in her box for six months without racing. She won more easily than at Saint-Cloud, and was also giving the second two kilos (4lb), which is a considerable amount of weight for smallish, 3-year-old PA fillies. So, to my eyes, she has improved! It’s equally great to be able to win over 2,000m at Saint-Cloud before dropping back successfully to 1,600m. To do that, she must be a champion."

Maxime Guyon opined: "That's great! Last time we combined to win at Gr1 PA level with her, which provided all concerned with some magic moments. The filly was giving weight all round today and showed that she was the best. She's a little bit of a rascal but, when Al Wakrah threw down the gauntlet to her, the filly found the required extra."

The family of Djavius des Landes and Nieshan. Bred in the Aveyron region by Jacques and Éliane Davy-Boudet, Image du Croate made her debut in the colours of her breeders, and finished second at Toulouse when trained by Éric Dell'Ova. She was subsequently acquired by Paul Basquin (of Haras du Saubouas fame) on behalf of her current owner, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani. The dam, Beanie du Croate (Dahess), won at Agen and was placed fourth at PA Group level. Image du Croate is her second foal but first winner. The mare also has a foal at foot by No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy).                                             The grandam, Shamilah du Croate (Dormane), was unraced but has managed to produce three winners, including Falcone du Croate (Munjiz), the winner of a 3-year-old maiden race in Qatar. The great grandam, D'Jadie de Teoul (Djouras Tu) foaled the smart Djavius des Landes (Octavius), the winner of the Coupe d'Europe des UAE (since upgraded to Gr1 PA status), at Chantilly. Around ten black type performers descend from her, and she also features as the grandam of the stallion Nieshan (Akbar), himself a triple winner of the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (Gr1 PA), in addition to the H.H. The President of the UAE Cup (Gr1 PA).
