MOSHRIF CEMENTS HIS PLACE AT THE TOP OF THE PA THREE-YEAR-OLD TREE

The winner of the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA) at Saint-Cloud in the autumn, Moshrif (Dahess) embarked on his journey of discovery at Doha on 23rd December, where he was pencilled-in for a crack at the Qatar Derby (Gr3 PA). The representative of Khalifa Sheail bin Al Kuwari, tackling a mile for the first time, not only got to grips with the shorter trip but also the fast conditions. Indeed, Moshrif took this opportunity to confirm that he is the best of his generation by winning in good style under Jim Crowley. The François Rohaut charge mastered Sahab (Af Albahar) and stablemate Hargan (Al Mamun Monlau), whom he had already beaten at Saint-Cloud. The quickest into his stride, Shgarde (Af Albahar) was soon dictating terms. He was tracked by Miatem Athbah (Af Albahar) and Al Wakrah (TM Fred Texas) on his outside. Meanwhile, Moshrif, the author of a rail-hugging trip, waited at the rear. The pacesetter progressively weakened at the beginning of the final turn, leaving Miatem Athbah and Al Wakrah to battle it out, with Hargan also making headway. In the straight, Moshrif came with a strong surge. Without having to force his talent, he quickened into the lead and proved a clear winner. After making good headway along the rails, Sahab ran on to snatch second off Hargan. Al Wakrah, trained by Thomas Fourcy, finished at the foot of the podium, and a place in front of his stablemate Moharram (Assy), with the latter delivering an eye catching finish.

A CLASS ACT

The winning trainer François Rohaut said: "The distance was a bit short. However, Moshrif showed a touch of class on leaving the final bend, and the momentum carried him to the wire.

He was caught a little bit flat-footed before showing his true mettle. Being drawn one wasn't an advantage, but Jim Crowley made light of this. Moshrif and Hargan will return to France. It was a great day for the owner and everything was well organised by Patricia Musial as expected. We were well received and it's invariably a pleasure when it comes to racing in Qatar."

THE BROTHER OF MURAAQIB

Purchased for €185,000 at the last Arqana PA sale by Gérard Larrieu, Moshrif was bred by Shadwell. He is a son of Dahess (Amer), a stallion based at the Haras de Thouars, where he stands on behalf of Al Shaqab Racing. His dam, Tashreefat (Bengali d'Albret), a winner over 1,000m, was second in the Liwa Oasis (Gr1 PA, 1,400m). She was sold for €310,000 to His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Auctav online sale in December. Moshrif is the brother of four black type performers, including the high class and the sextuple Gr1 PA winning Muraaqib (Munjiz), plus Barnamaj (No Risk Al Maury) - the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (Gr1 PA) victor. Barnamaj has since taken up stallion duties in Morocco [where he is managed by] Sorec. Muraaqib has been assimilated to the Haras de Thouars stallion roster this season.

The grandam, Seglaoui (Tidjani), bred by Martial Boisseuil, is also the grandmother of the Prix Burkeguy (L PA, 1,400m) third Kareem (Al Saoudi). This maternal line is also that of one of the foundation mares of the PA French Stud Book, Fleur d'Avril (Meke).
